Major Tanis Richards has secured a berth on the Intrepid' colony ship, but first she has to ensure it can launch and that's no mean feat even for the 'Butcher of Toro' a nickname that cost her a promotion and left her with a bad-ass reputation that does not sit well with the civilian population who know nothing of the true circumstances which only serves to make Major Richards a more dangerous adversary for her opponents. As the launch date approaches hidden enemies make more desperate attempts to remove first the Intrepid, and when that fails, Tanis herself becomes the main target of the assassin/saboteurs.

In this book MD Cooper takes command of the story and it flows easily throughout this first in series. Richards proves a likeable 'believable' character and her support team are worthy of their roles.

If there is any criticism of this book it's the lack of knowledge of the protagonists and therefore the loss of an added dimension to the story. However, to be completely fair this doesn't detract from the fast-paced plot and there are plenty of action scenes built into every chapter to keep the adrenaline junkies happy.

I gave this book full marks for an entertaining read and would recommend it to all my fellow SF fans. The second book of the Aeon 14 Series 'A Path In The Darkness' follows this. Look out for my review
